Elevation
332 m a.s.l.

Peñón de Ifach is one of the most recognisable symbols of the Costa Blanca — a monumental rock promontory rising 332 metres above sea level, emerging directly from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean in Calpe. This Natural Park (Parque Natural del Penyal d'Ifac) attracts thousands of visitors each year who tackle the demanding trail to the summit to enjoy breathtaking panoramas — from Ibiza on the horizon to the mountain ranges of Sierra de Aitana. But Calpe offers much more than just the Peñón: the Roman ruins of Baños de la Reina, the picturesque beaches of Arenal-Bol and La Fossa, a vibrant fishing port with a lonja (fish auction) and an atmospheric old town. It is an ideal day trip from the Alicante area.

Why visit Calpe and Peñón de Ifach?

Iconic views — panorama across 300 km of coastline and the island of Ibiza

Free entry — trail is free, only online booking required

Natural Park — endemic flora, gull colonies and peregrine falcons

Baños de la Reina — Roman ruins at the foot of the rock (free entry)

Fishing port — fresh seafood and an authentic lonja

Calpe (Calp in Valencian) is a charming fishing town located 90 km north of Gran Alacant, between Benidorm and Dénia. The landscape is dominated, of course, by Peñón de Ifach — a limestone monolith of 332 metres that forms the smallest Natural Park in the Valencia Community (45 hectares). The trail to the summit is one of the most exhilarating hiking experiences on the entire Spanish coast. If you are planning a visit to Benidorm, Calpe makes an excellent stop along the way.

How to book entry to Peñón de Ifach?

Online booking is MANDATORY!

Since 2020, entry to the Peñón de Ifach trail requires a mandatory reservation through the official Generalitat Valenciana system. Without a booking, park rangers will not let you onto the trail — no exceptions!

Step by step:

  • 1. Go to cfrv.gva.es (Conselleria de Medio Ambiente)
  • 2. Select Parque Natural del Penyal d'Ifac
  • 3. Choose your date and entry time (groups every 30 min, max 30 people)
  • 4. Enter your personal details and receive confirmation by email
  • 5. Print it or show the confirmation on your phone at the gate

Reservations open 2 weeks in advance and disappear within minutes! Log in at midnight on the day new slots open, especially for spring weekends (March-May).

What is the trail to the summit of Peñón de Ifach like?

The trail up Peñón de Ifach is approximately 2.5 km one way with an elevation gain of 332 metres. It divides clearly into two parts with completely different characteristics.

Part 1: Easy (to the tunnel)

  • • Time: ~30 minutes
  • • Gentle ascent through vegetation
  • • Paved path with information boards
  • • Interpretation centre at the start
  • • Views of the port and La Fossa beach
  • • Suitable for families with children

Part 2: Demanding (tunnel to summit)

  • • Time: ~1-1.5 hours
  • • Steep trail over rock
  • • Metal chains and handrails
  • • Some sections require pulling yourself up
  • • Exposed edges with drops
  • • Not recommended for those with vertigo

The tunnel carved into the rock in 1918 is the turning point of the trail. It is about 45 metres long and quite narrow — inside it is cool and dark, so a phone torch comes in handy. After emerging from the tunnel, the real climb to the summit begins.

What to bring for the hike and how to prepare?

Proper preparation is the key to a safe and enjoyable trek up Peñón de Ifach. Remember that there are no water points or toilets on the trail!

Essential gear

  • Hiking boots — with thick soles and good grip
  • Water — minimum 1.5 litres per person
  • Sunscreen — SPF 50+, no shade on the trail
  • Head covering — cap or hat
  • Backpack — free hands mean safety on the chains

Additional tips

  • Energy snacks — bars, nuts, fruit
  • Torch — useful in the tunnel
  • Camera/phone — views worth capturing!
  • Booking confirmation — printout or PDF on phone
  • Light jacket — it can be windy at the top

NEVER attempt the trail in flip-flops, sandals or trainers! Wet limestone rock is extremely slippery. Do not overestimate your abilities — if you feel tired, turn back. Safety is more important than the summit.

When is the best time to climb Peñón de Ifach?

Spring (Mar-May)

Best time! Temperatures 18-25°C, blooming vegetation, endemic silene ifacensis. Ideal visibility.

Autumn (Sep-Oct)

Very good time. Fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures, the sea still warm from summer (24-25°C).

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Not recommended! Temperatures 35°C+, no shade on the rock, risk of heat stroke. Huge crowds.

Best time of day: Always choose the earliest available time slot (usually 8:00 or 8:30). It is cooler in the morning, fewer people on the trail, and morning light gives the best photographs. You will spend 20-30 minutes at the summit admiring the panorama.

What will you see from the summit of Peñón de Ifach?

The panorama from the summit of Peñón (332 m a.s.l.) is one of the most spectacular on the entire Spanish coast. On clear days visibility extends over 300 kilometres!

Towards the sea

  • Ibiza — visible on clear days on the horizon!
  • Turquoise waters — crystal clear from a bird's-eye view
  • Gull colonies — nesting on inaccessible cliffs
  • Yachts and boats — Calpe port like a model

Towards the land

  • Sierra de Bernia — mountain range inland
  • Sierra de Aitana — highest peak of the province (1,558 m)
  • Calpe — panorama of the town and salt lakes (salinas)
  • Coastline — from Benidorm to Dénia

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you book entry to Peñón de Ifach in Calpe?

Booking entry to Penon de Ifach is mandatory and done exclusively online through the official reservation system of the Generalitat Valenciana at cfrv.gva.es, under the section for Parque Natural del Penyal d'Ifac. Reservations open two weeks in advance and disappear very quickly, especially during the spring and summer seasons, so it is worth logging in at midnight on the day the new batch opens. The system allows you to select a specific entry time, with groups entering every 30 minutes with a limit of around 30 people per slot. The reservation is completely free of charge, but without it park rangers will not allow you onto the trail leading to the summit. Before your visit, print your confirmation or have it ready on your phone screen, as the check at the entrance gate is thorough. Children under 10 may only enter the trail accompanied by an adult, and dogs are not permitted in the natural park.

What is the difficulty level of the Peñón de Ifach trail?

The trail to the summit of Penon de Ifach has an intermediate to advanced difficulty level and requires good physical fitness and appropriate hiking footwear. The first part of the route from the interpretation centre to the tunnel is relatively easy, following a gentle ascent through Mediterranean vegetation and taking about 30 minutes. The real challenge begins after passing through the tunnel carved into the rock, where the trail becomes steep, rocky and in places requires pulling yourself up using metal chains and handrails fixed into the rock face. On the final section before the summit the path runs along exposed rock with drops on both sides, which can be problematic for those with a fear of heights. Total ascent time to the summit averages 1.5 to 2 hours, and the descent takes about an hour. The trail is not recommended for small children, elderly people with limited mobility, or in conditions of rain or strong wind when wet limestone rock becomes very slippery.

When is the best time to hike Peñón de Ifach?

The best time for trekking on Penon de Ifach is decidedly spring, from March to May, and early autumn in September and October. In these months temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius, which is ideal for the physically demanding ascent to the summit without risk of heat stroke. Spring has the added bonus of blooming Mediterranean vegetation, including the endemic silene ifacensis which grows exclusively on the rocks of the Penon. Summer is strongly advised against, as temperatures exceeding 35 degrees combined with the lack of shade on exposed rock make the climb dangerous and extremely exhausting. It is worth starting the route at the earliest available time slot, usually eight or eight thirty in the morning, to avoid the worst heat and crowds on the trail. In winter the trail is sometimes closed due to strong winds or rainfall, so always check weather conditions and opening status before planning your visit.

What are Baños de la Reina in Calpe and are they worth visiting?

Banos de la Reina are fascinating remains of a Roman fishing villa from the first to the fourth century AD, located on the rocky shoreline at the foot of Penon de Ifach in Calpe. The name Queen's Baths comes from a legend about a Moorish princess, although in reality they are the ruins of a Roman fish-farming complex with excellently preserved stone pools carved into the natural rock that fill with seawater during high tide. The archaeological site is open and free to visit all year round, and is best seen at low tide when the pools and stone structures are most visible. It is worth wearing rubber-soled shoes as wet rocks can be slippery. Banos de la Reina make an excellent complement to a trek up Penon de Ifach, as they are just a 10-minute walk from the trail base. This is one of the best-preserved archaeological sites of its type on the Mediterranean coast and a must-see for history enthusiasts visiting Calpe.

How do you get from Gran Alacant to Calpe and how long does it take?

The journey from Gran Alacant to Calpe covers approximately 90 kilometres and takes from one hour to one and a half hours depending on the route chosen and traffic conditions. The fastest route runs along the AP-7 motorway (toll road, costing approximately 7 to 8 euros one way), allowing you to arrive in under an hour. The alternative route via the N-332 national road is free but takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes longer and passes through the centres of coastal towns. It is worth considering a mixed route, taking the motorway to Benidorm and then the scenic drive along the coast through Altea to Calpe, which combines time savings with beautiful views. In Calpe, free parking is available at Playa Arenal-Bol and on streets around the port area, though in peak season it is better to arrive early in the morning. Leaving from our Brisa Alacant apartment at seven in the morning, you will comfortably make the morning entry slot for Penon de Ifach.
