What is the Palmeral de Elche and why is it a UNESCO site?
Palmeral de Elche (El Palmeral) is the largest palm grove in Europe and one of the largest in the world outside Africa. It comprises over 200,000 date palms spread across approximately 500 hectares, with many trees over 300 years old.
In 2000, the Palmeral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an exceptional example of transplanting an African landscape to Europe. The site's history dates back to Phoenician times, but it was the Moors in the 10th century who developed the irrigation system and created the palm plantation that survives to this day. The palm grove is not just a monument — it is a living ecosystem where dates are still cultivated and white palm leaves are used in traditional Palm Sunday ceremonies.
What is the Huerto del Cura and what is the Imperial Palm?
Huerto del Cura (The Priest's Garden) is the jewel among Elche's gardens — a small but stunningly beautiful botanical garden that forms part of the Palmeral. Growing on its grounds is the Palmera Imperial (Imperial Palm), a unique date palm with eight branches growing from a single trunk. This true wonder of nature is over 165 years old and was named after Empress Sissi of Austria, who visited the site in 1894.
The garden enchants with carefully designed paths among palms, cacti, pomegranates, and bougainvillea. You will also find replicas of the Iberian sculpture Lady of Elche, ponds with fish and turtles, and quiet corners perfect for resting in the shade of palms.

What is the Basílica de Santa María famous for and what is Misteri d'Elx?
The Basílica de Santa María is a monumental Baroque church from the 17th–18th century, built on the site of a former mosque. Its impressive blue dome dominates the Elche skyline. From the basilica tower (open to tourists) there is a breathtaking view over the sea of palms surrounding the city.
It is here that the Misteri d'Elx (Mystery of Elche) has been performed since the 13th century — a medieval liturgical drama depicting the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the only performance of its kind in Europeto have survived the papal ban of the 16th century prohibiting theatrical performances inside churches. In 2001 UNESCO inscribed Misteri d'Elx on the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The star of the collection is a replica of the Lady of Elche(the original is in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid) — an Iberian sculpture from the 4th century BC, considered one of the most important ancient art artefacts on the Iberian Peninsula. The biggest attraction is the Palmeral de Elche, the largest palm grove in Europe with over 200,000 date palms spread across approximately 500 hectares. Be sure to visit the Huerto del Cura garden with the legendary eight-armed Imperial Palm that is over 165 years old, named after Empress Sissi. The MAHE Archaeological Museum features a replica of the famous Lady of Elche and over 5,000 years of regional history in an interactive exhibition. For a walk, I recommend the narrow streets of the historic centre with its Moorish urban layout, and on Saturday mornings you should definitely visit the famous El Rastro market, one of the largest on the Costa Blanca.
How do you get to Elche from Gran Alacant?
From Gran Alacant to Elche it is just 25 kilometres, which means approximately 25 minutes by car via the AP-7 motorway or the N-332 road towards Murcia. The most convenient way is by car, as parking in central Elche is relatively easy and inexpensive, with underground car parks costing just 1 to 2 euros per hour. I recommend parking near the Huerto del Cura garden and exploring the city on foot from there, as all the main attractions are within a few minutes' walk. Alternatively, you can use ALSA buses running regularly from Alicante bus station to central Elche, which takes about 30 minutes. RENFE trains on the Alicante-Murcia route stop at Elche Parc station, from where it is a few minutes' walk to the centre. From Gran Alacant you first need to take a bus to Alicante and then transfer, which takes a total of about 40 to 50 minutes. By car is definitely the most convenient and fastest option.

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the temperature is pleasant for long walks around the city.
What is Misteri d'Elx and when does it take place?
Misteri d'Elx is a unique medieval liturgical drama that has been performed continuously in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Elche since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest surviving theatrical performances in all of Europe. The spectacle tells the story of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and involves over 300 amateur actors from the local community, including children singing angelic parts. It is the only performance of its kind in Europe to have survived the papal ban of the 16th century prohibiting theatrical performances inside churches. In 2001 UNESCO inscribed Misteri d'Elx on the prestigious list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, recognising its exceptional cultural value. The main performances take place on August 14th and 15th as part of the Feast of the Assumption celebrations, and public dress rehearsals can be seen on August 11th, 12th, and 13th. Tickets for the main performances sell out very quickly, so it is advisable to book them several months in advance on the official Misteri d'Elx website.

Elche is the undisputed capital of the Spanish footwear industry, where a significant proportion of shoes manufactured in Spain are produced.
