What seasonal products can you buy at the Gran Alacant market?

One of the mercadillo's greatest assets is the seasonality of its products. Depending on the time of year you will find completely different treasures:

Winter (Nov-Mar)

Valencian oranges and mandarins, artichokes, cauliflower, broccoli. The best time for citrus — they taste completely different from imported ones!

Spring (Mar-May)

Strawberries from Huelva (the best in Europe!), asparagus, broad beans, peas, loquats (nispero). Spring colours and aromas.

Summer (Jun-Sep)

Watermelons and melons for a fraction of northern prices, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes, peaches, nectarines. A salad lover's paradise!

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Grapes, figs, pomegranates, prickly pears (chumbos), mushrooms, edible chestnuts. Perfect for autumn dishes.

Available all year: olive oils, honey, almonds, olives, cheeses and dried fruits.

What are the rules and tips for a Spanish mercadillo?

Cash is essential!

Most stalls at the mercadillo do not accept cards or mobile payments. Bring enough cash in small denominations. There is an ATM at the nearby shopping centre.

Bargain politely

At clothing and souvenir stalls you can negotiate prices, especially when buying several items. For food products bargaining is less common. Always with a smile and respect! Useful phrases: ¿Puede hacer mejor precio? (can you do a better price?) and ¿Me puede hacer descuento? (can I get a discount?).

Bring reusable bags

Plastic carrier bags are charged for in Spain, and not all stalls have them. Bring a large shopping bag or woven basket — it is also part of the local style!

Arrive early

The best selection and most pleasant atmosphere is before 10:00. Later it gets crowded, and in summer the heat becomes noticeable. After shopping, drop by a nearby cafe for coffee — that is what the locals do!
