TL;DR — The Quick Answer

EU citizens do not need a visa — register for CRUE + NIE at Oficina de Extranjería, Calle Campo de Mirra 6, Alicante. Banking: start with N26/Wise (no NIE required), then open HolaBank (CaixaBank) or Sabadell Key Account once you have your NIE. SIP health card: empadronamiento in Santa Pola + NUSS → Consultorio Gran Alacant, Av. Escandinavia 31, tel. 966 912 360. Gran Alacant has NO piped gas — electric only. Digi fibre from 10 EUR/mo, water via Hidraqua. The TRAM does not reach Gran Alacant — Vectalia bus approx. 2 EUR / 45–50 min to Alicante. A car is strongly recommended.

Legal requirements: CRUE, NIE and Empadronamiento

EU citizens: you do not need a visa of any kind. The NLV and Digital Nomad Visa are designed for non-EU nationals. Your path is: CRUE + NIE + empadronamiento. Non-EU nationals (UK, US, Canada, etc.) should scroll down to the visa section.

EU Registration Certificate (CRUE) and NIE number

After 3 months in Spain, EU citizens must register at the Central Register of Foreigners. The result is a green certificate containing your NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) — essential for everything: bank account, utility contracts, rental agreements, property purchase, and healthcare access.

Oficina de Extranjería de Alicante

Calle Campo de Mirra 6, 03005 Alicante

A cita previa (online appointment) is required via sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es → Province: Alicante → Trámite: CERTIFICADOS UE. The certificate is issued on the same day.

Utilities: electricity, water, internet, gas

Gran Alacant has no piped gas network

The entire urbanisation uses electricity (heating, cooking) or butane cylinders for cooking (Repsol ~17.67 EUR per 12.5 kg bottle, with home delivery). A couple typically uses one bottle every 4–8 weeks.

  • Average couple bill: 60–120 EUR/month
  • Summer (air-con): can rise to 150–180 EUR
  • Transfer of contract (cambio de titular): free; requires NIE, IBAN, CUPS code from invoice

Getting around: transport from Gran Alacant

The TRAM does NOT reach Gran Alacant

TRAM L1 runs north from Alicante (Luceros → El Campello → Benidorm). Gran Alacant is located south of Alicante Airport and is not served by any tram line. Verified by tramalacant.es.

Vectalia Bus

Line 1/3: Santa Pola – Gran Alacant – Arenales del Sol – El Altet – Alicante (bus station).

Single ticket~2 EUR
Journey time~45–50 min
movilidad.vectalia.es, granalacantguide.wordpress.com

Car and other options

  • Car: effectively essential — Gran Alacant is a sprawling low-density urbanisation; many services lie beyond walking distance
  • Taxi: rank near the Centro Comercial; PideTaxi app for regulated fares
  • Airport ALC: 5 min by car — one of the most convenient airport locations in Europe
  • Uber/Cabify: operational in Alicante province but coverage in Gran Alacant itself can be unreliable

Expat community and cost of living

Gran Alacant is a genuinely international community — approximately 50% of residents are foreign nationals, including a large British community, Scandinavians, Germans, Dutch, and a growing number of Eastern Europeans. The established expat network makes the first months after relocation significantly easier.

Practical bureaucracy tips

Cita previa — book appointments online

The only official source for government appointments is sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. Avoid paid third-party sites that resell slots. New slots typically appear at 08:00 or midnight — be quick.

Gestoría — worth every euro

A licensed gestor will handle all paperwork (NIE, padrón, tax filings) for 100–300 EUR. They save weeks of time and eliminate costly form errors. Strongly recommended for your first relocation to Spain.

Documents — always bring photocopies

Bring originals + 2 photocopies of every document. Government offices rarely photocopy for you. A copy shop near any Correos (post office) branch in Alicante city centre can help.

Essential apps

Cl@ve PIN + Certificado Digital (FNMT) for online filings, GVA+Salut for healthcare, MiDGT for driving licence, Mi Carpeta Ciudadana (gov.es) to track applications and receive notifications.

Schools for expat families

Spanish state primary schools (CEIP, free) are in walking distance and enrolment requires only a padrón certificate from Santa Pola. For English-medium education the nearest accredited options are:
