A residential district of Santa Pola municipality, ~15 km from Alicante city centre and 10 minutes from Alicante-Elche Airport. A peaceful, well-served community with easy access to nature.
Where is Gran Alacant?
Gran Alacant is a large residential urbanisation in the municipality of Santa Pola (Province of Alicante, Comunidad Valenciana), about 4 km north of Santa Pola town centre and approximately 15 km from Alicante city. It sits between the Clot de Galvany Natural Reserve and Carabassí beach, with views over the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Alicante.
The area has grown dramatically — from around 1,000 registered residents in 2000 to 11,773 in 2024 (INE data). The community is a mix of Spanish locals and Northern European expats (UK, Scandinavia, Netherlands). The atmosphere is calm and family-oriented — there are no hotels or typical tourist infrastructure.
Public Transport
Gran Alacant is served by Vectalia (Baile) buses. The Alicante TRAM (FGV) does not reach Gran Alacant — the tram network runs north of Alicante (towards El Campello, Benidorm), not south towards Santa Pola. tramalacant.es

Weekly Market (Thursday)

Sierra de Santa Pola & Lighthouse
Scenic hiking trails on the Sierra de Santa Pola hills, with a lighthouse (Faro) offering views over the Bay of Alicante and the Costa Blanca coastline.
Walkability & Character
Gran Alacant is hilly — walkability depends on the specific location of your accommodation. Lower parts of the neighbourhood (near Carabassi beach, Novamar area) are flat and pedestrian-friendly. Upper urbanisations require a car or local bus to reach the beach.
Main avenues (Av. Mediterráneo, Av. Escandinavia, Av. Noruega) have pavements. The shopping centre with all essential services is within a 10–15 minute walk (or local bus line 15) from most locations.
The neighbourhood is consistently described as quiet, safe and residential. "Friendly, relaxed feel" — none of the bustle typical of resort towns. Ideal for families with children, seniors and long-stay guests.
