TL;DR — The Quick Answer
The best free Costa Blanca attractions are the pedestrian route to Santa Barbara Castle, La Ereta Park, Cabo de la Huerta, Clot de Galvany, Santa Pola salt flats, Mirador del Faro, the public palm-grove parks of Elche and seasonal street events. Tabarca is not free to reach: the ferry is paid, but walking the island, harbour, old town and coves does not require an island entry ticket. For events, always check the official programme because dates, capacity and safety rules change each season.
Costa Blanca can be surprisingly affordable if you choose the right kind of day. Many of the strongest experiences in the Alicante region are outdoors: sea viewpoints, castle walks, public palm gardens, wetlands, coves and street festivals. You still need to budget for transport, food and optional activities, but the places below do not depend on buying an entry ticket.
Quick list: best free things to do
Walk up Santa Barbara Castle
Alicante Turismo lists castle access and the MUSA museum as free. Walking up through Monte Benacantil gives you the city, port, Postiguet beach and Mediterranean views without buying a ticket. Alicante Turismo.
La Ereta and Santa Cruz
La Ereta Park links the old quarter with the castle slopes. It is one of the simplest free viewpoints in Alicante, especially around sunset. La Ereta Park.
Cabo de la Huerta coastal trail
The official Cabo de la Huerta route is 4.35 km and is described as an easy coastal trail with coves, rocky bathing spots and open sea views. Cabo de la Huerta trail.
Clot de Galvany
VisitElche lists marked routes, bird hides and free guided visits on Sundays and public days at 10:00. It is one of the best no-ticket nature stops near Gran Alacant. VisitElche.
1. Santa Barbara Castle for free: take the walking route
Santa Barbara Castle is the obvious starting point. According to Alicante Turismo, access to the castle and MUSA museum is free. The most rewarding budget version is to walk up through Monte Benacantil or the Santa Cruz and La Ereta side. You get the climb, the city rooftops, the port, Postiguet beach and a huge Mediterranean panorama.
Go early or late. In warm months the stone paths heat up quickly, and the final sections can feel exposed. If someone in your group has limited mobility, check the current lift and shuttle information before choosing the route. The walk is free, but it is still a real uphill city walk.
2. La Ereta, Santa Cruz and Alicante viewpoints
La Ereta Park sits on the slope below the castle and works as a free viewpoint between Barrio de Santa Cruz and Benacantil. Combine it with the white streets of Santa Cruz, the Explanada de España and the harbour promenade. None of those require an entry ticket, and together they give a strong first impression of Alicante.
This is a good evening plan because the light softens and the route can end near restaurants, ice cream shops or the seafront. If you are trying to keep costs low, bring water and snacks from a supermarket and use the city walk as the main activity.
3. Beach walks and coastal hikes: Cabo de la Huerta and Carabassi
The official Cabo de la Huerta trail is 4.35 km and links rocky coves, bathing areas and open sea views around Alicante. It is described as easy, but it is exposed, so bring sun protection and avoid the hottest part of the day in summer.
Near Gran Alacant, Carabassi Beach is the natural option: wide sand, dunes and long coastal views. Keep to the marked dune crossings and treat the area as a fragile landscape, not a shortcut. For more ideas, see our best Costa Blanca beaches guide.
Free beach days are easy to plan badly: no shade, no water and the wrong hour can make them tiring. The best low-cost version is a morning walk, a simple picnic and a return before the strongest heat.
4. Free parks and reserves: Clot de Galvany, Salinas and Elche palm groves
Clot de Galvany is one of the best free nature stops in the area. VisitElche lists routes, bird observation points and free guided visits on Sundays and public days at 10:00. Check the current calendar before relying on a guided visit.
The Salinas de Santa Pola Natural Park is another good no-ticket plan: salt-flat landscapes, birds and sea air. Keep your distance from wildlife and respect closed paths, especially in nesting periods.
In Elche, the public areas of the Palmeral are ideal for a shaded walk. VisitElche describes the parks and gardens of the palm-grove landscape; just avoid assuming every museum or special garden is free.
5. Mirador del Faro: free views over Santa Pola and Tabarca
Mirador del Faro in Santa Pola is a simple, high-impact viewpoint. The Santa Pola council has described an accessible walkway from the parking area to the lookout, with views towards the Mediterranean and Tabarca Ayuntamiento de Santa Pola. It is a strong option when you want views without a long hike.
Tabarca: paid ferry, free island time
Tabarca needs careful wording in a free-attractions guide. It is not free to reach by ferry or catamaran. Alicante Turismo points visitors to boat connections and notes seasonal changes, while operators publish their own fares and times. Always check live schedules because sea conditions and season affect departures.
Once on the island, the best low-cost activities are simple: walk the walled old town, the harbour, the coves, the lighthouse area and the viewpoints. Alicante Turismo also lists the Nueva Tabarca Museum as free, but opening hours should be checked before crossing. For a full plan, read our Tabarca Island day trip guide.
Free seasonal events
The most memorable free events are usually in the street. Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante takes place in June, with public monuments, parades, mascletàs and fireworks visible in public spaces. Food, drinks, seated areas and selected activities may cost extra, and the annual programme is the only reliable source for exact times.
In spring, Cruces de Mayo brings decorated streets and flower crosses, especially around Santa Cruz. Semana Santa processions can be watched from public routes, while Santa Pola and Elche run local fiestas and open-air cultural events through the year.
Free does not always mean unlimited. Some concerts require invitations, some plazas fill up, and safety rules can change from one edition to the next. Check Alicante Turismo, VisitElche or Santa Pola official pages in the week of your visit.
How to keep the day genuinely low-cost
Group places by area: Alicante for Santa Barbara, La Ereta and the old quarter; Elche for the palm groves and Clot de Galvany; Santa Pola for the salt flats, Mirador del Faro and the port. For Gran Alacant and Santa Pola, check Vectalia bus information and avoid planning a rail route to Gran Alacant. The Alicante TRAM network is useful in other directions, but it does not serve Gran Alacant.
