Private Rentals vs Hotels in Gran Alacant — Honest Comparison

Accommodation comparison
Gran Alacant, Costa Blanca
Families & couples

Planning a trip to Gran Alacant and wondering whether to book a hotel or a private apartment? It's a common question among visitors to Costa Blanca — and the answer depends on several key factors. Here's an honest, data-driven comparison based on 2025–2026 figures.

TL;DR — The Quick Answer

Gran Alacant has just 1 hotel (AJ Gran Alacant 4*, from ~£46/night) and around 20 residential complexes with private apartments. For stays of 7+ nights and groups of 3+, a rental is significantly better value — lower cost per person, a kitchen (save ~€200/week on food), privacy and a pool. The hotel wins for 1–2 night stays and solo city breaks. Direct booking = 10–20% cheaper than Booking/Airbnb.

Gran Alacant: one hotel, dozens of apartments

Gran Alacant is unique in Spain — a quiet, upmarket urbanisation made up of around 20 residential complexes with pools. There is only one traditional hotel here: AJ Gran Alacant by SH Hoteles (4 stars, 108 rooms, next to the shopping centre). The rest of the accommodation market is private apartments and villas — exactly what gives this area its peaceful, residential character.

2026 data: Guest satisfaction with vacation rental stays is 82%, compared to 68% for hotels (per StayFi 2026). The gap is especially significant for families with children.

According to Alicante Today, nearly half of Costa Blanca tourists in 2025 did not stay in hotels — 2.06 million people chose holiday homes, and a further 1.6 million chose vacation apartments. Gran Alacant perfectly reflects this trend.

Why choose a private rental in Gran Alacant?

Real food savings

A family of 4, cooking 1–2 meals a day from the local Mercadona, can save €200 per week. Over a 2-week stay, that's €400 back in your pocket.

Space for the whole family

A 2-bedroom apartment means a living room, 2 separate bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Parents can relax after the kids go to sleep. Impossible in a hotel room.

Pool without the crowds

Apartment complexes in Gran Alacant have their own pools for residents. No queues, no towel-reserved sunbeds at 7am. Just peace and water.

Washing machine = less luggage

71% of families with children choose apartments specifically for the washing machine. Beach + sand + kids = daily washing. You can fly with a smaller bag.

Privacy and a sense of home

Your own key, your own entrance, your own terrace. No one knocks at 10am for cleaning. Leave when you want. This matters especially for longer stays.

Perfect for workation

An apartment in Gran Alacant with fast fibre broadband and a desk is perfect for remote work. A hotel offers a lobby and a room — but not the quiet of your own office for 4 weeks.

When is a hotel the better choice?

  • Short stay of 1–2 nights: no need to pay a deposit or organise grocery shopping
  • Solo city break: a hotel in Alicante centre gives better access to nightlife and sights
  • Predictable standard: a chain hotel 4* guarantees daily cleaning, room service and 24/7 reception
  • Breakfast included: if you don't want to cook or find a café in the morning — a hotel with a buffet breakfast has the edge

According to Rick Steves, the break-even point for an apartment is 3 nights. Below that, a hotel is usually more practical. Above it — the rental wins on every front.

Practical tips for renting an apartment in Gran Alacant

  • Book 3–6 months in advance for July and August — the best apartments fill up quickly, especially those with private terraces and garden access.
  • Check the tourist licence number (Número de Registro de Viajeros) — all legal holiday rentals in the Valencia Community must display it. It is usually listed on the listing page or in the rental contract.
  • Ask about the pool schedule — most complexes in Gran Alacant have a lifeguard and defined hours (typically 10:00–20:00). Some have heated pools open year-round.
  • Supermarkets within walking distance: Mercadona and Lidl are less than 2 km from most Gran Alacant complexes. Stock up on arrival — restaurant prices on the coast can be 30–40% higher than supermarket equivalents.
  • Airport transfers: Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is around 10 km from Gran Alacant. A taxi costs approximately €15–20. There is also a direct local bus — Vectalia Line 3 (Santa Pola – Gran Alacant – El Altet Airport – Alicante) — which stops right in Gran Alacant.

Direct booking: save 10–20% vs Booking and Airbnb

Booking.com charges owners a commission of ~15–18% in Spain. Airbnb switched to a host-only fee of 15.5% from October 2025. This commission is built into the price you see on the platform — you're paying for the convenience of the intermediary.

Booking directly with the owner means that commission stays in your pocket (or is shared as a mutual benefit). For Brisa Alacant, long-stay discounts add further savings: 15% for 14–20 nights, 20% for 21–27 nights and 40% for a month+.
