Workation, long stay and expat life on the Costa Blanca: the complete guide

TL;DR — The Quick Answer

The Costa Blanca, and specifically Gran Alacant near Santa Pola, is a convenient base for a workation, a long stay or a relocation. EU citizens can work remotely from Spain without a separate visa, and for stays over three months they register as EU residents — confirmed by the Spanish administration. Fibre internet is widespread (CNMC) and winters are mild (AEMET). This pillar gathers our guides on remote work, cost of living and accommodation in one place, and the Brisa Alacant apartment hosts guests for stays from 11 nights.

More and more people no longer choose between work and Spain — they combine the two. A workation, that is remote work from somewhere other than home, and longer expat stays are now a natural scenario for anyone who can work from a laptop. This guide organises everything worth thinking through before such a trip to the Costa Blanca: paperwork, internet, costs, climate and choosing a place where you will stay for weeks rather than two days. Along the way we link to our detailed articles so each topic can be explored separately.

Why the Costa Blanca for a workation and a long stay

The Costa Blanca is the province of Alicante on Spain Mediterranean coast. For a remote worker three things matter: stable internet, a bearable climate for most of the year and a convenient time zone. Mainland Spain runs on CET (UTC+1, CEST in summer), so working hours overlap with the rest of continental Europe — video calls with a team in Poland, Germany or France do not require getting up in the middle of the night.

The climate suits stays outside summer too. Data from AEMET, the Spanish meteorological agency, show average December and January temperatures for Alicante around 12°C, with comfortable daytime highs near 16–17°C and few rainy days. That is a real advantage: you can arrive in autumn or early spring, find cheaper accommodation outside peak season and still work by a sunlit window instead of fighting grey skies.

Gran Alacant, an urbanization in the municipality of Santa Pola, is a good compromise between calm and access to the city. Away from the bustle of a big resort, yet only about 15 km and 20 minutes by car along the N-332 from Alicante Old Town. That lets you live quietly and, when needed, quickly reach a shared office, the airport or a larger supermarket.

Paperwork: visas, residence and registration

The most important point for many readers: as an EU citizen you do not need a visa to live and work remotely in Spain. According to the Spanish administration, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals may enter and stay up to 90 days with no formalities. For stays over three months you register and receive the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión, the so-called green NIE. If you live at a fixed address, you also complete the empadronamiento — registration at the town hall, useful for dealing with the administration and healthcare.

The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa is a different path, intended for non-EU nationals. It stems from Ley 28/2022 (the Startups Law) and covers remote workers employed by companies registered outside Spain. According to the Spanish Foreign Ministry and the Unidad de Grandes Empresas it requires, among other things, documented income of roughly 200% of the Spanish minimum wage. The exact euro figure changes every year with the minimum wage, so always check the current value directly on the consular page rather than in older guides.

If a non-EU national plans a stay without paid work in Spain, there is also the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), based on showing sufficiently high passive income. For EU citizens these paths are not needed — registering as a resident is enough. We describe daily life and procedures in full in our guide to expat life and relocation to Gran Alacant.

Remote work: internet, coworking and a place to work

Internet is the foundation of every workation. Here Spain does very well: according to the regulator CNMC, by the end of 2024 fibre (FTTH) accounted for about 90% of active fixed lines, and the network reached municipalities covering 99.7% of the population. Fast, stable connectivity is therefore the norm even outside the big cities. Even so, always confirm the exact plan and speed with a provider at your address, because different urbanizations have different infrastructure.

Gran Alacant is a quiet residential district with no coworking scene of its own. The nearest shared offices are in the city of Alicante, about 20 minutes by car, where spaces such as ULab and the international Spaces network operate. In practice many people combine working from the apartment with occasional trips to a coworking space for meetings or days when they want a change of scenery.

If you are only just considering this mode, start with our guides to the digital nomad in Gran Alacant and the broader digital nomad on the Costa Blanca. They show how to organise a working day, where to find cafés with good Wi-Fi and how to balance work with rest by the sea.

Cost of living during a longer stay

A longer stay follows different maths than a short trip. What matters is the monthly budget for food, transport, bills and small pleasures, not the price of a single night. The Costa Blanca can be cheaper than big European cities, but the real cost depends on lifestyle, the town and how often you eat out.

We break these numbers down in two separate guides: cost of living in Gran Alacant 2026 for the local perspective and cost of living in Spain 2026 for a country-wide comparison. Together they give a realistic monthly budget that helps decide whether a workation lasts two weeks or turns into a relocation.

Where to stay for a trip measured in weeks

For a long stay a hotel rarely makes sense. It lacks your own kitchen, space and a sense of home, and the cost rises with every night. An apartment with separate rooms gives you a place to work, a distinct rest area and the freedom to cook, which makes a huge difference for remote work and family stays.

We covered the comparisons that help choose an accommodation model separately: private rentals vs hotels, direct booking vs Booking and Airbnb and a review of standards in the article on premium villas and apartments in Gran Alacant. Each shows a different angle on the same decision: comfort, price and service quality for a longer rental.

You will also find practical everyday context in the main guide to Gran Alacant.

FAQ: workation and long stay on the Costa Blanca

Can I work remotely from Gran Alacant as an EU citizen?

Yes. As an EU citizen you have the right to live and work remotely in Spain without a separate visa. For up to 90 days you need no paperwork, and for a longer stay you simply register as an EU resident. What matters most is a stable connection and a comfortable place to work.

What visas apply to digital nomads in Spain?

The Spanish Digital Nomad Visa stems from Ley 28/2022 and is aimed at non-EU nationals working for companies registered outside Spain. EU citizens do not need it. The income threshold for the DNV is around 200% of the Spanish minimum wage and changes every year, so always check the current figure on the official consular page.

Does an EU citizen need to register for a longer stay?

For stays over three months an EU citizen registers and receives the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión (the so-called green NIE). If you live at a fixed address you also complete the empadronamiento, the registration at the town hall, which is useful for dealing with the administration and healthcare.

Is the internet in Gran Alacant good enough for remote work?

Spain is one of Europe fibre leaders. According to the regulator CNMC, by the end of 2024 fibre covered about 90% of active fixed lines and the network reached municipalities covering 99.7% of the population. Fast connectivity is therefore the norm even outside big cities, though you should always confirm the exact plan with a provider at your address.

Where is the nearest coworking to Gran Alacant?

Gran Alacant is a quiet residential urbanization without its own coworking scene, so the nearest hub is the city of Alicante, about 15 km and 20 minutes by car via the N-332. What is the Costa Blanca weather like off-season?

Winters are mild. AEMET data for Alicante show average December and January temperatures around 12°C and comfortable daytime highs near 16–17°C, with few rainy days. That suits longer stays outside summer too, although individual days can be cooler.

How long can I rent the Brisa Alacant apartment?

How much does it cost to live during a longer Costa Blanca stay?

Season matters

Mild winters and quieter months outside summer are a good time for a longer, calm stay with remote work.

Budget by the month

For a stay measured in weeks, count costs per month, not per night — it changes the calculation.
